Andhra Plans Double-Decker Metro Rail for Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam

The Andhra Pradesh government has approved plans to introduce double-decker metro systems in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu held a meeting with municipal and urban development officials to review the project, which will span 66 km in Vijayawada and 76.9 km in Visakhapatnam.

The project will follow a double-decker design, particularly on national and state highways, with metro rail constructed above flyovers and roads at ground level. The first phase in Visakhapatnam will include a 15 km stretch from Madhurawada to Thatichetlapalem and another 4 km from Gajuwaka to the Steel Plant. In Vijayawada, the system will cover 4.7 km from Ramavarappadu Ring Road to Nidamanuru.

Naidu confirmed that discussions with the Centre would soon be held to secure funding and move the project forward, with the goal of having operations commence within four years.
