Cabinet Clears Rs 36.3 Bn Pune Metro Phase-2 Extensions

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned Phase-2 of the Pune Metro: the 7.7 km Vanaz–Chandani Chowk spur (Corridor 2A) and the 5.1 km ¸é²¹³¾·É²¹»å¾±â€“W²¹²µ³ó´Ç±ô¾±/Vitthalwadi spur (Corridor 2B). Together the wholly elevated extensions will add 13 stations and 12.75 km to the current Vanaz–Ramwadi line, knitting fast-growing suburbs such as Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi and Wagholi into the city’s east–west rapid-transit spine. Maha-Metro expects to finish the works within four years.

Costed at about Rs 36.3 billion, the project will be funded in equal parts by the Union Government, the Maharashtra Government and external lenders. It is consistent with Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan, which envisages a continuous Chandani Chowk–Wagholi corridor to lift the share of public transport and cut road congestion on Paud and Nagar Roads. The new stretches will also feed the District Court interchange, linking Line 2 with Line 1 (Nigdi–Katraj) and Line 3 (Hinjewadi–District Court) for seamless multimodal journeys.

Long-distance buses from Mumbai and Bengaluru will terminate at Chandani Chowk, while services from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will connect at Wagholi, giving passengers direct Metro access. Daily ridership on the full Vanaz–Wagholi route is forecast to rise from 96,000 in 2027 to 201,000 in 2037, 287,000 in 2047 and 349,000 in 2057.

Pre-construction surveys and design work are under way, and Maha-Metro will execute all civil and electro-mechanical packages. Officials say the expansion will unlock Pune’s economic potential while delivering safe, fast and low-carbon mobility across the metropolitan region.
