The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has granted approval to seven projects from the Ministry of Railways. These projects have an estimated cost of approximately Rs 325 billion and will be fully funded by the Central Government. The focus of these proposals is to enhance railway operations and alleviate congestion, thereby facilitating vital infrastructural growth along the most heavily utilized sections of the Indian Railways network.
The initiatives will span across 35 districts within nine states, namely Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. Together, they will extend the Indian Railways network by 2,339 kilometers and generate employment opportunities, providing 7.06 crore man-days of work for residents in these states.
These projects are pivotal for transporting a diverse range of commodities including foodgrains, fertilizers, coal, cement, fly-ash, iron and finished steel, clinkers, crude oil, lime stone, edible oil, and more. The expansion of capacity will lead to an additional freight traffic volume of about 200 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum). The railway system's inherent eco-friendliness and energy efficiency will contribute to both accomplishing climate objectives and reducing the nation's logistics expenses.
Aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision for a renewed India, these initiatives will empower the local populace by fostering a self-reliant workforce, consequently boosting employment and self-employment prospects within the region. These endeavors are a manifestation of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity. This integrated approach to planning will ensure smooth and uninterrupted movement of people, goods, and services, furthering the concept of seamless connectivity.
