Centre approves Rs 180 cr to rebuild railway network in Assam

The Central Government has approved Rs 180 crore for the rebuilding of the railway network in Assam's Dima Hasao district, which was destroyed by floods and landslides.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the Centre's contribution of Rs 180 crore for restoration efforts.

Sarma said that the Railway Ministry has also informed them that the railway network repair work in the Dima Hasao area would be completed by July 10 this year.

He said that repairing the damaged segments of the critical rail connection would restore connectivity between Assam's Barak and Brahmaputra valleys, as well as connect Tripura, Mizoram, and parts of Manipur to the rest of the country.

The Chief Minister of Assam also met with Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi.

After floods damaged the state in mid-May, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) stopped all trains via Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section to Barak Valley, Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur due to damage to railway lines at several sites.

So far this year, 24 people have died in Assam due to severe floods and landslides.
