Indian Railways Enhances Passenger Capacity with Additional Coaches

Indian Railways is expanding its passenger capacity by augmenting train compositions, introducing new services, and operating special trains during peak travel seasons. Due to varying occupancy patterns, with high demand on popular routes during rush periods and lower utilization during off-peak times, the railway network is continuously monitored and optimised.

To accommodate more passengers, the composition of Mail/Express trains has been structured to include 12 General and Sleeper Class non-AC coaches and 8 AC coaches in a 22-coach train. Additionally, unreserved non-AC passenger trains, MEMU, and EMU services ensure affordable travel options.

Fleet Expansion & Modernisation Indian Railways currently operates 79,000 coaches, distributed as follows: General & Non-AC Sleeper Coaches: 56,000 (70%) AC Coaches: 23,000

The introduction of Amrit Bharat trains, featuring semi-permanent couplers for jerk-free travel, foldable snack tables, and mobile holders, enhances the passenger experience. Each train consists of 12 Sleeper Class coaches and 8 General Class coaches.

Additional Coaches & Special Services To accommodate increasing demand, extra coaches are being added to existing trains: 872 additional coaches were attached in 2023-24. 983 additional coaches were added in 2024-25 (till Feb 25). 1,200 General Class coaches were integrated into Mail/Express trains with LHB coaches in 2024-25.

Plans are in place to manufacture 17,000 General/Sleeper Class Coaches to meet growing demand.
