Kanpur Metro likely to be operational by end of December 2021

Kanpur Metro is expected to open by the end of December 2021, based on the progress of the trial runs. According to reports, operations on the 9 km priority corridor will begin in the first phase.

The elevated route will be served by a total of 8 trains, with six rakes operating on the elevated corridor. During repairs and emergencies, the two additional trains will be parked at the depot and plugged in for commercial use.

The Research Design and Standards Organizations have planned a six week trial period before the city's maiden runs, according to the Kanpur metro project scheme. During this interim period, the agency will test and monitor aspects such as train suspension, train vibration in motion, brakes, and speed to ensure the deployment of a reliable train system.

The Commissioner of Metro Rail and Safety should issue the clearance order after the trial is completed. Passengers will be allowed to ride rakes after that. The Kanpur Metro will open the 9 km-long elevated Priority Corridor between and Motijheel in the first phase of operations.

The metro's completion was delayed by four months in the last two years due to the coronavirus quarantine. However, with the easing of restrictions, work quickly picked up, to the point where metro trial runs began days ahead of schedule, according to IIT Kanpur authorities.

Kanpur Metro has reportedly entered the second phase of development by launching the construction of Corridor-I, to keep up with the rapid pace of development from Chunniganj to Nayaganj. The remaining portion of this track is being worked on, according to the official statement. Seven underground stations will be spaced over a 7.5 km stretch, as well as five overhead stops on a 6.5 km elevated track. Corridor-I is 23 km long in total.

In addition to Corridor I, MD UPMRC Kumar Keshav said that Corridor two Chandrashekhar Azad Agriculture University to Barra will be completed in the next three years. The Kanpur Metro network will be expanded to 32.4 km by December 2024, according to the Metro Corp.

According to estimates, the Kanpur Project will cost approximately Rs 11,07648 crores. According to reports, the European Investment Bank has loaned around Rs 5,551.99 crores, with the rest of the cost being borne jointly by the Union and the state. It should be noted that approximately Rs 2,100 crores have already been spent on the priority corridor's development.
