Khordha-Balangir Rail Project Hits Milestone Tunnel Breakthrough

The Khordha Road-Bolangir New Rail Line Project achieved a major milestone with the breakthrough of Tunnel Number T3 (2,620 meters) between Buguda and Banigochha in Odisha鈥檚 Nayagarh district on January 13, 2025. This is the longest tunnel in Nayagarh and the second-longest in the project, built using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Spanning 301 kilometers, the project faces significant challenges in the Eastern Ghats, with seven tunnels totaling 12.76 kilometers under construction. Notably, 215 kilometers of the rail line are already complete, connecting Khordha Road to Daspalla and Bolangir to Purunakatak. Work on the remaining sections is progressing. Once completed, the rail line will reduce travel time between Bhubaneswar and Bolangir, boost regional connectivity, and drive socio-economic growth by improving access to education, healthcare, and markets.
