Kochi Metro preparing detailed plan for two cities

Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) will prepare a comprehensive transport plan for the metro projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. The Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC) has been tasked with preparing the project, which includes assessing suitable metro systems for these cities.

A detailed project report will be prepared upon the submission of a comprehensive transport plan by March. Meanwhile, authorities will begin the preparatory work for metro projects, including issuing a tender for flyover construction at Sreekaryam.

KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behra has sought the support of the district administration and mayors of both cities for the project. The metro system suited for a city is identified based on the number of passengers. Earlier, it was suggested that Metro Neo or Metrolite projects should be implemented in Kozhikode since a conventional metro project would cost around Rs 2 billion per kilometre. The cost of Light Metro has been estimated at Rs 1.50 billion per km and Metro Neo at Rs 600 million.
