MMRDA Invites Bids for 108 New Coaches for Mumbai Metro Pink Line

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has solicited bids to produce and supply 108 new coaches (rolling stock) for the 15.18 km Line-6 (Pink Line) project of Mumbai Metro.

The Pink Line is an under-construction elevated metro line in Mumbai, India. The line is being developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and is expected to be completed by 2023. The line will run from Swami Samarth Nagar (Lokhandwala) in the western suburbs of Andheri to Vikhroli in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai.
The line will have 13 stations, including Swami Samarth Nagar, Adarsh Nagar, Jogeshwari (West), JVLR, Shyam Nagar, Mahakali Caves, SEEPZ Village, Saki Vihar, Rambaug, Powai Lake, IIT Powai, Kanjur Marg, and Vikhroli (EEH). The line will provide interchange with the Yellow Line at Adarsh Nagar, the Aqua Line at SEEPZ, the Green Line at Kanjurmarg (West), the Red Line at Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road, and the Mumbai Suburban Railway at Jogeshwari and Kanjurmarg. The fare and timings of the Pink Line have not yet been decided.

The Pink Line is expected to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity in Mumbai. The line is also expected to boost economic activity in the city. The line is being built at a cost of Rs. 6,672 crore.

It's been under construction by J Kumar Infraprojects (Packages BC-01R1 & BC-03) and MBZ-EIIL JV (Package BC-02R) since 2019. The MMRDA intends to run these 108 standard gauge coaches in an 18 train-set x 6 coach configuration. They will be stabled and maintained at Kanjurmarg Depot, which is located on a 15-hectare plot of ground near the line's eastern end.

This systems contract will be funded by a $241 million loan issued by the New Development Bank (NDB) in 2020.
