Rail Infra Boom in Maharashtra: Rs 1.74 Trillion Push for Better Trains

In a major press interaction held in Mumbai themed 鈥淏etter Infrastructure, Better Technology, Better Trains,鈥 Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw jointly presented a comprehensive picture of the transformation underway in Maharashtra鈥檚 railway network鈥攑articularly the high-density Mumbai Suburban Railway.

Better Infrastructure Union Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of infrastructure in expanding suburban services. Rail projects worth nearly Rs 170 billion (approx. USD 2 billion) covering over 300 km of new lines are progressing at full pace. These works are aimed at easing congestion on existing tracks, improving train frequency, and meeting the high commuter demand in Mumbai.

Better Technology A major technological advancement is on the horizon with the planned introduction of Kavach 5.0, a next-generation safety and signaling system. Tailored specifically for Mumbai鈥檚 suburban rail, this system will enable trains to operate at reduced intervals safely, thus increasing the number of services.

Better Trains In a massive upgrade for passenger comfort, 238 new air-conditioned suburban trains will soon be rolled out. Designed for Mumbai鈥檚 unique needs, these trains aim to provide a cooler, smoother, and more reliable travel experience to daily commuters.

Adding to the modernization efforts, CM Fadnavis also announced the launch of the Mumbai One Card鈥攁n integrated mobility card for use across all public transport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including suburban trains, metros, monorail, and BEST buses.

Strategic Rail Expansion One of the key announcements was the doubling of the Gondia鈥揃allarshah railway line, a strategic 240 km corridor that connects Vidarbha and Marathwada. This project comes with an investment of Rs 48.2 billion (approx. USD 578 million).

Set to improve connections to Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, the project will see modernization of 29 stations, 36 major bridges, 338 minor bridges, and 67 road under-bridges. 鈥淭his will significantly improve north鈥搒outh connectivity and transform the economies of aspirational districts,鈥 said Vaishnaw.

Station Upgrades and More Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 132 stations in Maharashtra are being redeveloped鈥攑art of a national effort covering 1,300 stations. Many of these are close to completion, signaling a visible uplift in passenger amenities.

Unprecedented Investment The Indian Railways has committed a record-breaking Rs 1.74 trillion (approx. USD 20.9 billion) investment in Maharashtra. This includes key projects like the Mumbai鈥揂hmedabad Bullet Train, Dedicated Freight Corridors, and large-scale station redevelopment, underscoring Maharashtra鈥檚 pivotal role in the future of Indian transportation.

Cultural Boost Highlighting tourism and cultural revival, CM Fadnavis announced two new heritage tours:

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Glorious Maratha Tour, to be run by IRCTC.

A 10-day Bharat Gaurav Tourist Train circuit showcasing Maharashtra鈥檚 cultural, spiritual, and historical richness.

Additionally, the first Indian Institute of Creative Technology鈥攁 national-level creative hub鈥攚ill be established in Mumbai, further boosting the city鈥檚 profile in media and innovation sectors.

Fadnavis also spoke on the upcoming World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister in May, which is set to position Mumbai as a global creative capital.
