Railway project to rejuvenate Gwalior station on lines of airport

The Railways has launched a project to revitalise Gwalior's railway station along the lines of an airport at a cost of Rs 463 crore. Passenger facilities will be expanded while preserving the station's old heritage architecture and giving it a modern look.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the revitalisation of the 145-year-old Gwalior Railway Station on Monday. Following the 1857 revolution, the British built this railway station in Gwalior in 1878. Scindia ruled the state at the time. However, after 62 years, the royal Scindia family converted the station into a heritage site in 1940. At the moment, 40 thousand passengers pass through in 24 hours.

The new railway station will be designed to accommodate 1.5 lakh passengers in 24 hours.

KPC, a Hyderabad-based company, has been awarded the contract for the development of the Gwalior station. The work will be completed in 24 months by the company. It will be prepared over the course of 40 years.

For the passengers, 19 lifts will be installed on various platforms. There will be 23 escalators as well. Likewise, the number of platforms will rise to six. Platforms one and six will have separate entrances. There will also be an escalator at the entrance. The concourse will be a fully AC concourse area with a capacity of 12,355 passengers. The railway station of Gwalior will be completely ready by 2024. This station will be given a complete heritage look. Also, no tampering will be done with the historical building.
