Sealdah Subway Opens for Seamless Railway-Metro Connectivity

Kolkata's transport system has taken a significant leap forward with the inauguration of the Sealdah subway, providing a direct link between Sealdah railway station and Sealdah Metro station. This new underground passage is set to ease congestion, enhance commuter convenience, and ensure a faster transit between the railway and the East-West Metro corridor.

With a daily footfall of 35,000 to 40,000 passengers, Sealdah Metro station has long needed improved accessibility. The newly opened subway now offers a seamless connection, benefiting thousands of daily commuters from suburban areas such as Barasat and Ranaghat.

Enhanced Infrastructure for a Smoother Commute Designed to prioritise passenger comfort and safety, the subway is equipped with ramps for differently-abled individuals, a modern ventilation system, and clear signages for easy navigation. The passage also connects key locations, including Sealdah Court and BR Singh Hospital, providing greater accessibility for both daily commuters and emergency services.

Timely Commissioning to Support Metro Expansion The subway鈥檚 launch aligns with the ongoing expansion of the East-West Metro, currently running between Sector V and Sealdah, with an extension to Howrah Maidan in the pipeline. With rising metro usage, the new passage is a crucial addition, facilitating seamless intermodal connectivity.

Milind Deouskar, General Manager of Eastern Railway, recently reviewed the project and urged officials to finalise any pending work swiftly. He underscored the urgency of making the subway operational without further delay to meet the increasing commuter demand.

Future of Sealdah鈥檚 Transport Hub With continuous infrastructure upgrades, Sealdah station is evolving into a modern transit hub. The inauguration of this subway marks a significant step in Kolkata鈥檚 urban mobility transformation, making daily travel more convenient for thousands of passengers.
