The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned a Final Location Survey (FLS) for a proposed 75-kilometre railway line connecting Melli to Dentam in Sikkim, with a budget allocation of Rs 22.5 million. To be undertaken by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the survey marks a significant step towards improving rail connectivity in the southern and western regions of Sikkim, especially in areas close to the India–Nepal border.
The proposed alignment will run through strategic locations such as Jorethang and Legship, extending the reach of the under-construction Sivok–Rangpo railway line, which is expected to be operational by 2027. Once complete, this corridor will offer seamless rail connectivity and is projected to boost tourism, trade, and employment, particularly in regions like Gyalshing.
NFR officials have stressed the strategic and developmental value of the project. The railway is expected to improve access to markets, healthcare, and education, thereby catalysing inclusive growth in one of India’s most ecologically sensitive and remote areas. The survey will assess the feasibility and alignment of the route, factoring in the challenging Himalayan terrain and ensuring adherence to environmental sustainability standards.
This initiative aligns with the central government’s broader objective of regional integration and infrastructure expansion in the Northeast. By bridging infrastructure gaps and connecting previously inaccessible locations, the Melli–Dentam rail link is set to transform local economies and strengthen national integration.
More details regarding the project’s execution timeline and phases will follow as the survey progresses. Residents and local stakeholders are optimistic, viewing the project as a vital move towards sustainable infrastructure and improved quality of life in Sikkim.
