Southern Railway is advancing major development initiatives across key railway stations in Thiruvananthapuram, with completion targeted in the coming months.
One of the major highlights is the transformation of Thiruvananthapuram North into a terminal station. This upgrade includes the construction of a new station building, installation of tactile paving for improved accessibility, two lifts, and platform shelters, all of which are expected to be completed by next month. Over the past three years, the station has already undergone significant improvements, including the raising of platforms, installation of six bay shelters, and the addition of a water recycling plant.
Officials indicated that these developments are part of a wider effort to ease congestion at Thiruvananthapuram Central. As part of this strategy, interstate train operations鈥攊ncluding those to Chennai鈥攚ill increasingly be routed through Thiruvananthapuram North. In addition, the redevelopment of Neyyattinkara railway station is progressing swiftly and is expected to be completed by August.
Simultaneously, Thiruvananthapuram Central is undergoing substantial upgrades, including the construction of new station facilities and a passenger concourse, which are anticipated to be completed within the next two years. Improvements have also been carried out at Kazhakkoottam鈥攚here platforms have been extended and new seating installed鈥攁nd at Pettah, where station amenities have been upgraded. Further development works are ongoing at Balaramapuram, Amaravila, Dhanuvachapuram, and Parassala stations.
Among these, Balaramapuram is seen as strategically significant, as it will serve as a connecting point for the upcoming Vizhinjam railway line.
