Tuticorin port to be transformed into transhipment hub

The V O Chidambaranar (VOC) Port or the Tuticorin Port in Tamil Nadu is set to be transformed into a major transhipment port, and a new multi-modal logistics park will be set up near Sriperumbudur.
In August last year, port Chairman T K Ramachandran had said that the port would be transformed into a transhipment hub at an outlay of Rs 7,000 crore.
While launching various infrastructural, social welfare projects in the state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said about 575 projects, which include port modernisation, new port development, port linked industrialisation, coastal community and port connectivity development involving an outlay of over Rs 6 lakh crore, has been identified for implementation between 2015 and 2035 under the Sagarmala scheme.

Inaugurating the 4,144 tenements built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) Scheme, Modi also laid the foundation stone for the Rs 20 crore 5 MW grid connected solar power plant at VOC Port.
The Prime Minister also inaugurated the eight laning of the Korampallam Bridge and Rail Over Bridge at the VOC Port, constructed at an outlay of about Rs 42 crore.
Other projects that were unveiled included a 1,000 MW thermal power project, at an outlay of about Rs 8,000 crore, and a 709 MW solar power project worth around Rs 3,000 crore, belonging to an integrated lignite power company鈥擭LC India Ltd.
Foundation stones for the Rs 934 crore Lower Bhavani Project System that includes extension, renovation, and modernisation and the Rs 92 crore development of the integrated command and control centres in smart cities were also laid by the Prime Minister.
