World鈥檚 Largest Container Ship MSC Irina Docks at Vizhinjam Port

The world's largest container ship, MSC IRINA, arrived at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, marking a major milestone for the port, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2. The berthing process for the vessel has commenced.
MSC IRINA holds the distinction of being the largest container vessel globally in terms of TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) capacity, with the ability to carry 24,346 TEUs. Its arrival is expected to enhance India鈥檚 Exim trade competitiveness, especially since it is part of MSC鈥檚 core service connecting Asia to Europe.
The vessel provides direct connectivity to European ports such as Valencia, Barcelona, and Gioia Tauro, helping reduce both logistics costs and delivery times for imports from China and exports to Europe. This development is anticipated to benefit time-sensitive cargo such as perishable goods, readymade garments, and industrial accessories produced in South India by offering faster access to European markets.
Industry observers noted that the ship鈥檚 stopover has strategically positioned Vizhinjam Port and the state of Kerala on the global maritime trade map. The port is now viewed as one of the emerging major maritime hubs with long-term significance.
The long-standing logistical challenges faced by the Indian trading community in terms of time and location are expected to be significantly mitigated. Indian goods can now reach European supermarkets more quickly and in better condition, creating new global market opportunities for domestic manufacturers.
The vessel measures 399.9 metres in length and 61.3 metres in width鈥攏early four times the size of a standard football field. It was specifically built to transport high volumes of containers between Asia and Europe. Its maiden visit to a South Indian port underscores Vizhinjam鈥檚 ability to handle Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs).
Launched in March 2023 and beginning its maiden voyage in April 2023, MSC IRINA sails under the Liberian flag and is designed to stack containers up to 26 tiers high.
Vizhinjam Port has also recently accommodated other large vessels, such as MSC T眉rkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini, further establishing its status as a significant node in international maritime logistics.
