Defence Ministry signs MoU with BHEL for 16 upgraded gun mounts

On 28th November, 2023, a contract was signed by the Ministry of Defence with Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL), Haridwar, for the procurement of 16 Upgraded Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) along with associated equipment/accessories for the Indian Navy. The contract was signed under the Buy (Indian) category, and the total cost of the procurement is Rs 29.56 bn.

It was disclosed that the upgraded SRGM, a medium-caliber anti-missile/anti-aircraft point defence weapon system, would be manufactured by BHEL at its Haridwar Plant. This system is designed to provide a sustained rate of fire and high accuracy. Additionally, it is capable of multiple engagements in multi-threat scenarios, boasting a proven record of excellent performance against missiles and highly maneuverable fast attack crafts.

The installation of the upgraded SRGMs on the Indian Navy's in-service and newly built ships will be carried out by Mazagaon Dock and Shipbuilders, Mumbai, and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, Kolkata. Over a period of five years, the project is expected to generate employment for two and a half lakh mandays. Furthermore, the initiative aims to actively involve various Indian industries, including MSME, significantly contributing to the Government's efforts to achieve 'Atmanirbharta' in defence.
