East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has started work on phase-3 of the Shahdara Jheel-cum-recreational park project. It will be the first picnic spot in east Delhi with eateries, boating facilities, walking tracks, huge lawns, among others. While work on phase II is nearly completed, they have begun drafting a request for a proposal for the third phase. Only one concessionaire will operate all facilities, comprising boating, food court, booking of party lawns, parking lot, meeting hall, open amphitheatre, and maintenance and security of the place. The income collected will be shared on a specific ratio, as per an EDMC official. The second phase incorporated civil, electrical and horticulture works, like developing the open amphitheatre, administrative block, tiling, installing poles, party lawns, planting shrubs and grass, LED or decorative lights, decorations and grilles around the selfie points. A few works were pending due to payment not being issued to the contractor. As the project was devised under the AMRUT scheme, they were waiting for funds from the government. It was believed to allot them Rs 15 crore. Recently, the government issued the remaining Rs 5 crore after which work was expedited. Presently, levelling work is being done in the amphitheatre and lawns. It will be followed by horticulture works. They expect to make the place functional by the start of April. Entry to the area will be ticketed. Believing it will be a massive green area in the middle of residential colonies, people will host parties or meetings in the lawns and meeting rooms. There will be ample surface parking space for about 300 vehicles. The park measures about 32 acres, out of which the jheel is spread over 14 acres. Image Source
