In a significant move towards sustainable waste management and community-driven development, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Foundation and the Rural Development Department (RDD), Ladakh, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish Solid Resource Management Centres (SRMCs) in Leh district.

The agreement, signed in Leh by Chandrakant Pradhan from CII Foundation and Junaid Amin Bhat, District Panchayat Officer, Leh, aims to set a new benchmark for sustainable waste management in the region.

Key Objectives of the MoU Establishment of SRMCs at Kharu and Chuchot Blocks to streamline scientific waste management.

Promotion of eco-friendly waste disposal techniques to reduce environmental impact. Skill development and livelihood opportunities for local communities through waste management initiatives. Capacity-building programmes to empower residents with sustainable waste disposal knowledge. Implementation of pilot projects to test and refine innovative waste management solutions.

Timeline and Long-Term Impact The agreement, effective from March 25, 2025, will be executed over 18 months until September 30, 2026.
