In a public-private partnership with Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Re Sustainability (ReSL), a complete environment management services company, officially opened India's most advanced and the city of Kolkata's first C&D waste recycling plant on April 27, 2023. Firhad Fakim, Minister-in-Charge of UD&MA and GoWB, as well as other dignitaries attended the ceremony, including Atin Ghosh, Deputy Mayor and MLA; Tapash Chatterjee, MLA, and Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, MP. Debabrata Majumdar, MMIC (SWM), KMC & MLA, presided over the function. By converting construction and demolition waste into recycled aggregates, bricks, and tiles, this cutting-edge facility, which spans 5 acre and has a capacity of 1600 tonne per day, is poised to revolutionise Kolkata's waste management system and sustainable construction. As part of their #CloseTheLoop mission, they have just expanded its network of recycling centres across the nation with the Rs 400 million project. India recycles only 1% of its C&D waste, according to a CSE report published in August 2022. With six operational C&D facilities already in place, Re Sustainability is working to make this new recycling plant in Kolkata an essential development stimulus in the nation's C&D waste management efforts. According to a Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Re Sustainability survey, the diverse and culturally rich city produces close to 1600 tonne of C&D waste every day, the majority of which is left uncollected and dispersed throughout the city due to its strategic location as a corridor to the Northeast and its attraction of FDIs and real estate investments. Years of city waste have been suffocating the Dhapa landfill, but with the opening of the C&D waste recycling plant, a new era of environmentally friendly waste management has begun. This facility will put an end to the disorganised and uncontrolled waste management procedures, bringing about strategic benefits like lowering environmental impact, conserving landfill space, and satisfying the need for eco-friendly materials from the building industry.
