North Chennai Solid Waste Management gets funding

Solid waste management operations in the North Chennai areas are set to receive a boost as the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has made a decision to allocate funds to the Greater Chennai Corporation, aiming to enhance these operations.

According to a reliable source, this decision was reached during the authority meeting of the planning body. However, the specific amount of funds to be provided by CMDA is yet to be determined, as the authority has given initial approval to allocate the funds, as per the source.

The funds will be disbursed under the 'Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam', a program that was recently announced during a state assembly session. The government has earmarked Rs 10 billion for this initiative.

The primary goal of the 'Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam' is to identify and address the infrastructure deficiencies and developmental gaps in the region. To implement this scheme, the CMDA will combine its funds with other ongoing schemes.

During the authority meeting, chaired by CMDA minister and chairman PK Sekarbabu, several decisions were taken, including those related to the Urban Square project in Island Grounds and the establishment of a Global Sports City, among others.

The sports department has shortlisted three potential sites, namely Semmencherry, Kuthambakkam, and Vandalur, for the Global Sports City, and one of these sites will be finalized for the project.

Moreover, discussions were held regarding the improvement of transport links to the Kilambakkam bus terminus, which is currently under construction.

The meeting also addressed reclassification applications and reviewed the progress of projects announced during the 2023-2024 budget session, as stated in the CMDA release.
