Shimla households to be connected with sewerage network in 1 year

All Shimla households are likely to be linked to a sewerage network by the end of the following financial year.

Equipped with funding from the World Bank and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) strives to link all households in the city and some adjoining regions with sewerage and upgrade or retrofit the existing Sewage Treatment Plants (STP).

Unless the latest Covid wave turns out to be a disruptor, they intend to link every house with the sewerage network over the next year. Presently, they have approximately 80-85% household link to the network as per an SJPNL authority.

The firm has made a DPR of Rs 219 crore for the World Bank-funded project that will include replacing the existing four-inch pipelines with six-inch pipes and laying the pipes in the unlinked regions. They have sent the DPR to CPHEEO in Delhi and are anticipating approval in the coming 15 working days. Once they have the approval, they will float global tenders for the job, as per the official.

Apart from the current six STPs, four more STPS are in the pipeline. Two in Mashobra, one each in Panthaghati and Totu are in the pipeline, he said, adding that the city would have a whole of 10 STPs.
