UP govt installs 104 sewage treatment plants to clean rivers

The Uttar Pradesh government has installed 104 sewage treatment plants (STP) of 3,298.84 million litres daily (MLD) to improve the water quality of major rivers in the state including river Ganga.

According to the state government, the water quality in Ganga, Saryu, Gomti, Yamuna, and Rapti has improved significantly.

The Uttar Pradesh government said that drains flowing in the rivers have been stopped. Due to the reduction in the amount of pollution, aquatic beings are healthier. River's surface cleaning has become possible with the removal of silt. Diseases caused due to contaminated water will also be better controlled.

Along with the rivers cleaning and preventing sewage from falling into them, steps are also being taken, to give domestic sewerage connections in cities. This STP will prevent dirty sewage water from flowing on the city's roads.

An STP and sewerage line was presented to Anupshahr city under the Namami Gange programme. This STP helped to prevent the flow of contaminated water into the river. The work of laying the sewerage line was completed at Rs 78 crore.

Dredging was carried out in Lucknow's Gomti river to remove the silt accumulated on the surface along the same lines. A 120 MLD sewage treatment plant is being established to treat the sewer water of the GH Canal in the river.

The 128-year old Sisamau Nala has been fully closed in Kanpur. It used to be a major cause of the contamination of the river Ganga.
