Construction of a new railway bridge adjacent to the historic Lohapul bridge in Nagpur is currently underway to support the expanding third and fourth rail lines between Nagpur and Wardha. The Rs 30 million project is being executed by CS Construction India Pvt. Ltd. under the supervision of Central Railway鈥檚 construction department.
To facilitate the work, the existing Lohapul bridge鈥攚hich links East and West Nagpur鈥攈as been temporarily closed to traffic. The initial phase includes the shifting of underground utilities and installation of a new drainage system. Foundation work, including concreting, is set to begin shortly.
Officials anticipate the bridge鈥檚 completion within three to four months, provided the monsoon does not cause delays. The structure follows a traditional design rather than a push box model, which is expected to accelerate the pace once concreting commences. Iron rod meshwork for the foundation has already been laid.
Currently, trains operate across the Lohapul and Dhantoli bridges, connecting Nagpur railway station and Ajni under Central Railway鈥檚 Nagpur Division. The new bridge is a critical component of the third and fourth railway line expansion, aimed at boosting train handling capacity in the region.
Progress on the larger Nagpur鈥揥ardha railway project is also advancing steadily. The section from Sindi to Selu Road is nearly complete, with track now laid up to Ajni. Only 17 km remain to be finished鈥12 km from Selu Road to Sevagram, 2.5 km from Sevagram to Wardha, and 2.5 km from Ajni to Nagpur station.
The new bridge near Lohapul will play a vital role in supporting this expanded infrastructure, ensuring smoother train operations between Ajni and Nagpur.
