NHAI Cracks Down After Embankment Failure on NH-66 in Kerala

01 Jun 2025
A settlement of the embankment and failure of the reinforced earth wall has occurred on the Ramanattukara鈥揤alanchery section of NH-66 in Kerala. The incident took place on 19th May 2025 when the project was nearing completion.

Preliminary assessment indicates that the failure may have been caused by weak foundation soils unable to support high embankment loads. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has attributed the failure to the concessionaire's failure to confirm ground conditions and improve bearing capacity before commencing work.

As a disciplinary measure, NHAI has barred M/s KNR Constructions from participating in ongoing and future bids. Project Consultant M/s Highway Engineering Consultant has also been disallowed from future bidding. Additionally, the concessionaire鈥檚 project manager and the consultant鈥檚 team leader have been suspended.

An expert team, supervised by a retired IIT-Delhi professor, has visited the site to assess the damage and recommend remedial measures. The rectification work will be carried out at the concessionaire鈥檚 risk and cost. The expert panel will also advise on preventive actions for other projects in Kerala.
