ITC Limited has commissioned its first offsite solar plant in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, with a Rs 76 crore investment. The solar plant of 14.9 MW will help in reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The solar project is following the Chairman of ITC Sanjiv Puri's Sustainability 2.0 Vision to meet the requirement of grid electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030. Other renewable energy projects, including biomass boilers, are also underway. ITC told the media that it has a renewable energy portfolio of 138 MW of wind power plants and 14 MW of solar power plants with 53 MW of additional solar capacity are under execution. ITC has invested around Rs 1,000 crore in renewable energy assets. The generated renewable energy is used in the company's 20 factories, nine hotels and six office buildings across India. The Dindigul solar power plant is spread across 59 acres of area. It will generate more than 22 million units of renewable power every year for ITC hotels, food manufacturing plants, paper manufacturing units and printing and packing factories in Tamil Nadu. The company said that it focuses on large-scale investments in renewable energy assets as it is an integral part of the company's low carbon strategy towards the target of a net-zero economy. The company has a target of a 50% reduction in specific emissions and a 30% reduction in specific energy consumption by 2030 from its 2014-15 baseline.
