Ladakh is set to become a key player in India鈥檚 renewable energy sector with the development of a 13 GW solar power plant, aimed at meeting the Union Territory鈥檚 energy needs and contributing to the national grid. Union Power and Housing Minister Manohar Lal announced this ambitious plan during a three-day visit to Ladakh, where he reviewed the functioning of local power and housing departments. The plant, designed to harness Ladakh鈥檚 vast terrain for large-scale solar energy production, is expected to play a pivotal role in the region鈥檚 transition to renewable energy. Ladakh's expansive land area is ideal for solar power generation, and this plant is part of a larger strategy to address energy challenges and bolster infrastructure, Lal stated. To meet increased power demand, especially during the harsh winter months, Lal noted that the Government of India鈥檚 excess power quota is being allocated to Ladakh, ensuring uninterrupted supply. Power Infrastructure Upgrades Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, projects worth ?10.8 billion have already been launched to enhance Ladakh's power infrastructure. Notable among these efforts are power supply and distribution lines for the remote Nubra and Zanskar valleys, which will significantly improve energy access in these areas. Lal emphasized the urgency of completing these projects to meet the region鈥檚 energy requirements. Urban and Housing Initiatives The visit also included discussions on urban transformation. The minister directed officials to finalize Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for water supply and sewage treatment plants in Leh and Kargil under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0. These projects are set to improve the region鈥檚 urban infrastructure and living conditions. Additionally, a survey of homeless individuals will be conducted to ensure eligible beneficiaries can avail themselves of the PM Awas Yojana, while street vendors benefit from the PM Swanidhi scheme. Waste Management and Sanitation Improvements Lal reviewed waste management initiatives and stressed the importance of achieving 100% waste material processing in Ladakh. Plans to improve working conditions for sanitation workers are also underway, further demonstrating the government鈥檚 commitment to sustainable urban development. Ongoing Support for Ladakh鈥檚 Growth Assuring continued support for Ladakh鈥檚 energy and housing departments, the Union Minister emphasized that efforts would be made to resolve any bottlenecks in ongoing projects to ensure their timely implementation.
