Minister Reviews Gorakhpur Nuclear Project Progress

Gorakhpur, Haryana � Union Minister for Power, Shri Manohar Lal, reviewed the progress of the Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP), a key nuclear energy project by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) under the Department of Atomic Energy. The visit underscored the government’s focus on scaling up clean, safe, and reliable energy capacity through nuclear power.
The GHAVP project comprises four 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). Once completed, 50 per cent of the electricity generated will be allocated to Haryana, significantly strengthening the state's power infrastructure.

Project Timeline:
  • Unit 1 First Concrete Pour: Targeted by October 2025
  • First Criticality: Expected by June 2030
  • Commercial Operation: Anticipated by March 2031
  • Unit 2 Launch: Planned six months after Unit 1
The minister was also briefed on NPCIL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions. A total of Rs 750 million has been invested in community development, including the construction of roads, schools, a medical van fleet, and the development of an AstroTurf hockey ground. NPCIL has also conducted skill-building workshops and nuclear awareness programmes across schools, NCC camps, and civil services training centres.
The “Atom on Wheels� mobile exhibition van was showcased as a major outreach tool, aimed at educating the public about the role and safety of nuclear energy.
Commending NPCIL's efforts, Shri Manohar Lal highlighted the critical role of nuclear power in advancing India’s clean energy goals and meeting future energy demands.
