Mumbai's increasing energy requirements have been significantly enhanced with the launch of the Kharghar Vikhroli Transmission (KVTL), which is set to provide an additional 1,000 MW of power to the city. The existing capacity of the transmission corridor is inadequate to accommodate more power into the city, making this project crucial for Mumbai.
The necessity for this project is underscored by the memory of grid failures on February 27, 2022, and October 12, 2020, which plunged parts of Mumbai into darkness. The new Kharghar-Vikhroli line is not only expected to illuminate the city but also strengthen vital transportation networks, including bullet trains, Metro Rail, and city railways.
Covering around 74 circuit kilometres, the KVTL incorporates 400 kV and 220 kV transmission lines. One of its notable features is the 1,500 MVA 400kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Vikhroli, a first for Mumbai. The substation is designed for compactness, occupying an area of approximately 9,500 sq m. It is built with a unique vertical configuration, where 400kV and 220kV GIS are stacked vertically, optimizing the use of space.
During the implementation of the KVTL, Adani Energy Solutions (formerly known as Adani Transmission) faced various challenges. Diverse terrains posed unique obstacles, such as the construction of towers in creek areas using floating barges. In certain urban areas, height limitations were effectively managed by introducing specially designed horizontal configuration towers.
