ArcelorMittal plans to set up 4.5 GW solar park in Rajasthan

Steel manufacturing and mining major ArcelorMittal is planning investments for setting up solar energy parks in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Group chairman of ArcelorMittal, Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, met Ashok Gehlot, Chief Minister of Rajasthan recently and expressed his interest in setting up a solar park of 4.5 GW at Rs 1,90,000 crore of investment in Rajasthan. ArcelorMittal's HPCL-Mittal Energy Ltd unit would set up the plant.

ArcelorMittal has also been invited to invest in the mining sector of the state by Gehlot. Mittal also met Vijay Rupani, Chief Minister of Gujarat, and made a note of plans to invest $6809 million in Gujarat's wind energy, solar energy, and hydrogen gas production sectors.

The company is joining the trend of steelmakers moving into green hydrogen with this and spreading its footprint in renewable power generation.

A unit of power producer JSW Energy, JSW Future Energy, recently signed a pact with Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) based in Australia to explore green hydrogen development.

Under their pact, FFI and JSW Energy will work together and conduct scoping work on potential projects in green hydrogen production. They are also planning to explore opportunities to utilise green hydrogen for hydrogen mobility, steelmaking, ammonia, and other industrial applications mutually agreed upon in India.
