In addition to 26 existing and under-implementation projects, the government has revealed that it plans to implement 17 islanding schemes for power supply. The islanding scheme is a power system defence mechanism that separates a portion of the system from a disrupted grid to help sub-part survive in isolation from the rest of the grid while maintaining supply to essential loads in that area. This was cited in a ministry statement, according to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). All state load dispatch centres (SLDCs) have been instructed to create a separate islanding scheme display on their supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems for real-time monitoring of participating generators and critical loads, according to the CEA. The CEA also mentioned that the same display would be available at RLDCs, SLDCs, and sub-SLDCs. This will aid in the real-time monitoring of load generation balance on such electrical islands, which is critical to islanding success. In this regard, the Delhi SLDC has taken the lead and developed a SCADA display page for generators as well as frequency-specific load relief information. This will be done for all of the country's islanding schemes. These islanding schemes would ensure the maintenance of essential services as well as a faster restoration of electricity supply to consumers in the event of an outage. With the CEA, all five regional power committees, Power Grid Corporation, and Power System Operation Corporation, Power Secretary Alok Kumar reviewed all existing and planned islanding schemes in the Indian power system. The CEA was instructed to ensure that existing islanding schemes are functional and to design islanding schemes for major cities. Essential loads should be identified and covered in such an electrical islanded system so that they can be served even if there is a major outage.
