Gujarat sets a target for a reduction in carbon emissions from energy production to 139 MT by 2030 via raising installed renewable energy capacity to 68,000 MW in the next eight years. A release stated that the state has reduced carbon emissions by approximately 115% in 2022 in comparison with 2017, due to an increase in the installed renewable energy capacity in power generation. In 2017-18, the carbon emissions reduction from renewable energy in Gujarat was 12.08 MT, which surged to 26.01 MT, or 115% in 2021-22. The Gujarat government revealed the information in the release issued on World Environment Day. Gujarat's energy department decided to reduce its carbon emissions from energy production to 139 MT by 2030. The state government shall increase the installed renewable energy capacity to 68,000 MW by 2030. Carbon emissions due to thermal power in Gujarat is steadily reduced in the last five years. This is achieved because of the incentive provided by the state government for the promotion of renewable energy. In 2017-18, the share of renewable energy along with hydro energy in the power generation’s installed capacity in the state was 29% with 8,065 MW, which has now increased to 42% in 2021-22 having a contribution of 17,367 MW. Currently, Gujarat is in the second position in India in terms of the installed renewable energy capacity, the release said.
