Kathalguri-Namsai Power Line Goes Live Early, Boosts Arunachal Grid

A key transmission project vital to strengthening Arunachal Pradesh鈥檚 energy infrastructure has been completed five months ahead of schedule, significantly improving the region鈥檚 power reliability.

The Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) announced that the 220 kV double circuit Kathalguri-Namsai transmission line was successfully energised. Spanning 71 kilometres, the line connects the Kathalguri gas power plant in Assam, operated by NEEPCO, to a newly established 220 kV gas-insulated substation (GIS) at Namsai in Arunachal Pradesh.

Executed under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) model, the project also includes a bay extension at Kathalguri to enhance operational efficiency.

According to officials, the new transmission system will facilitate smoother and more stable power flow from the national grid into Arunachal Pradesh. It is expected to improve voltage stability and strengthen system resilience, which are essential for reliable electricity supply in a region marked by difficult terrain and rising energy demands.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein described the project as a milestone in the state鈥檚 efforts to build a robust and dependable energy infrastructure. He praised PGCIL for its effective implementation and strong commitment to the Northeast in a social media post.

The upgraded infrastructure is projected to support various ongoing development initiatives in the region by addressing increasing power requirements and reducing dependence on less reliable local energy sources.
