Kolkata Metro has begun installing solar power plants at several stations as part of its initiative to harness renewable energy, officials announced on Tuesday. Along the Blue Line, solar plants with a combined capacity of 763 kWp have been installed at Noapara, Dum Dum, Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, and Kavi Subhash stations, as well as the Belgachia tunnel ramp. Additionally, solar panels have been set up at the Metro's Tapan Sinha Memorial Hospital. In the East-West Corridor, solar power plants with a capacity of 1,519 kWp have been installed at Salt Lake Sector V and Central Park stations, along with the Central Park Depot. Meanwhile, the Purple Line features a 1,400 kWp plant at the Joka carshed, and the Orange Line has a 500 kWp plant installed at the new carshed in Kavi Subhash. These installations have been completed through a public-private partnership, according to a statement. Currently, Kolkata Metro has an installed solar power capacity of 4,197 kWp. An additional 360 kWp of panels is being installed on the roofs of buildings at Belgachia and Tollygunge, with these plants expected to be operational by the end of the month.(ET)
