Korba’s High-Tech Power Plant Announced

India’s first 800-MW advanced ultra-supercritical (AUSC) technology-based power plant may be developed at Korba, Chhattisgarh, where NTPC already operates a 2,600-MW unit. The project, using cutting-edge indigenous technology, is a joint effort by NTPC, BHEL, and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research.

Korba was selected after extensive site evaluations, and feasibility studies are underway. Initial estimates peg the project cost at ?15,000 crore, with the final figure to be determined after the feasibility report. Fiscal support for the plant was proposed in the Union Budget, emphasizing higher efficiency and indigenous innovation in power generation.

The AUSC technology boasts 46% plant efficiency, significantly higher than 41-42% of supercritical and 38% of subcritical units, promising better performance and reduced emissions. A formal nod from the power and heavy industries ministries will follow the feasibility study results.

The project exemplifies India's drive towards advanced power solutions, prioritizing efficiency and sustainability in the energy sector.
