NTPC Bongaigaon reaches milestone in Commercial Pond Ash Evacuation

NTPC Bongaigaon, an Assam power station, has reached a critical milestone by beginning commercial pond ash evacuation, a first-of-its-kind project for the station. In December 2022, a successful trial pond ash evacuation was carried out, opening the stage for the commercial operation.

The station auctioned 3 lakh metric tons of pond ash through M/s MSTC, and the provided quantity was fully auctioned in February 2023 for a term of one year at a price of Rs 64-68/- PMT. Pond ash evacuation has been a long-standing goal for NTPC Bongaigaon, and it has been accomplished thanks to the tireless efforts of Shri Karunakar Das, CGM, NTPC Bongaigaon, and the environment monitoring group, who have taken a keen interest in achieving this goal since its inception.

Shri Sanjay Pande, GM (FGD), Shri I. S. Reddy, GM (Maintenance), Shri Arunashis Das, GM (Project), and officials from EMG and Civil O&M attended the opening function of the commercial pond ash removal. Prior to the start of the evacuation, the pond ash lifters were given a safety pep talk on bulk material handling and road safety, emphasizing the necessity of material safety. The commercial evacuation of pond ash from NTPC Bongaigaon is an important success for the plant, demonstrating its dedication to ecologically benign and sustainable methods.

Pond ash, a byproduct of coal combustion in power stations, can be used in a variety of applications including construction, cement making, and road construction, among others. This NTPC Bongaigaon initiative is expected to contribute to the circular economy and encourage sustainable resource utilization while also earning cash for the station.
