NTPC steps towards a renewable push

NTPC, the state-owned power company, plans an aggressive push into renewable energy while also repurposing its existing coal-fired plants, said its Chairman and Managing Director, Gurdeep Singh.
鈥淲e will go for an aggressive push for solar, hydro, wind and repurposing of our existing coal based plants,鈥� Singh said in a panel discussions at KPMG hosted event.
He also stated that NTPC will increase its renewable energy share in their power mix, but this does not imply that NTPC will close its coal-fired plants.
At the end of July 2022, the NTPC Group had 69,134 MW of installed power generation capacity, of which 56,800 MW were coal-based, 6,400 MW were gas-based, 3,700 MW were hydroelectric, and 2,000 MW (or 2.8% of the total) were renewable energy-based.
Rajashri Gupta, managing director of ONGC Videsh (OVL), who was speaking at the same event, stated that natural gas is not a transition fuel in the energy transition but rather a transformative fuel.
鈥淥VL has a dream to be vehicle for transferring renewable energy technology to India from other nations,鈥� said Gupta in the same panel discussion.
He also stated that ONGC has reduced emissions by more than 15% in the last five years.
The theme of KPMG's two-day ENRich 2022 event is "Dealing with the Energy and Resource Trilemma."
