NTPC to Power Indian Army with Green Energy from Ladakh Microgrid

NTPC has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Indian Army to supply 200 kilowatts (kW) of round-the-clock renewable energy from its solar-hydrogen-based microgrid in Ladakh. The agreement, effective for 25 years, ensures a continuous supply of clean energy to the Army at Chushul, a strategic location in Ladakh.

This initiative is part of NTPC's commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions while supporting energy security in remote areas. The microgrid, which integrates solar power with hydrogen-based energy storage, is designed to replace the Army's conventional diesel generator sets. By doing so, it eliminates the need for fossil fuel logistics and significantly reduces carbon emissions.

The transition to renewable energy through this microgrid is expected to cut down approximately 1,500 tonnes of CO? emissions annually. The project aligns with India's broader efforts to enhance energy sustainability in high-altitude regions while reducing dependence on conventional fuel sources.

NTPC's renewable energy initiatives, including the development of green hydrogen-based solutions, contribute to India's clean energy goals. The deployment of this microgrid in Ladakh also demonstrates the feasibility of sustainable energy solutions in challenging terrains, reinforcing the potential of hydrogen technology in off-grid applications.

By integrating renewable energy into its operations, the Indian Army enhances its energy resilience while supporting national efforts towards carbon neutrality. This partnership between NTPC and the Army reflects a strategic move towards cleaner and more efficient energy alternatives in defence infrastructure.
