Ponda Taluka sees power supply boost with new substation at Kavlem

The electricity department has suggested a new substation in Kavlem, Ponda taluka in response to numerous complaints about low voltage, frequent power outages, etc. A site in Daag, Kavlem, has been identified by a team of officials, and land acquisition efforts are underway.

The installation of underground cables is also in progress throughout Ponda Taluka, and it is anticipated that the project will be finished in six months. Stephen Fernandes, chief electrical engineer told a news publication that the department is working on power capacity upgradation by installing a transformer of 63 megavolts per ampere (MVA) at Ponda substation to boost supply in the constituency and vicinity.

The work is likely to be completed by January 2024, he said. Due to its proximity, the substation at Daag will aid in meeting the power requirements of some areas of the Ponda municipal area. 60 to 70 per cent of the power that is distributed to Goa comes from the connection of two power lines from the grids of Karnataka and Maharashtra at the Curti power substation. During this peak season, he added, demand for power has increased to 750 megawatts.

Rs 500 million have been approved by the government for the upgradation of the Curti substation. A major step-up transformer with a capacity of 63MVA 220/33 Kv will be installed at Curti substation. After commissioning, power supply will be boosted in various parts of Goa, including, Panaji, Verna, Xeldem, and Ponda taluka,鈥 the chief electrical engineer said.

Funds of Rs 2.2 billion have been sanctioned under the central government scheme for low tension (LT) power cabling work at Ponda.
