Renewable energy capacity surged over 250% in 6-7 years: Narendra Modi

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India has set an example in the world in terms of protecting the environment, adding that the country's renewable energy capacity has increased by over 250% in the last six to seven years.
In a virtual meeting on World Environment Day, he said that India's renewable energy capacity has increased by more than 250% in six to seven years. Today India is among the top five countries of the world in terms of installed renewable energy capacity.
He also emphasised that the capacity of solar energy has increased by about 15 times in the past six years.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, India has taken a big step. A detailed roadmap has been released for the development of the ethanol sector. As we have reported, an E-100 pilot project for the production and distribution of ethanol across the country has been launched in Pune. Ethanol has become India鈥檚 major priority in the 21st century, said Narendra Modi.
A large part of the country's railway network has been electrified, and airports made solar power-based, the Prime Minister said.
He elaborated, before 2014, only seven airports had solar power facilities, whereas today, it has increased to more than 50.
PM Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Environment, Prakash Javadekar and the Ministry of Petroleum Transport, Dharmendra Pradhan, addressed the virtual meeting on World Environment Day.
The event was jointly organised by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, is one of the biggest events organised by the United Nations (UN) to create awareness about nature.
