Sun Mobility to launch EV battery swap stations in Bengaluru

Sun Mobility, an Electric Vehicles (EV) mobility solutions provider, announced recently that it would roll out 100 battery swapping stations called Swap Points across the city of Bengaluru.

It will help in easing concerns over the limited range issue faced by EVs, especially the inadequate infrastructure. Hence, bringing down costs and carbon footprints.

This support and collaboration is a significant step towards making the state, as well as, its urban landscapes cleaner and greener. Moreover, this will bolster the vision to establish Karnataka as an EV capital of India. Moreover, Bengaluru will lead the change by creating an environment that has nurtured innovation.

Additionally, Karnataka has announced an EV policy that will bring in more investments in the green vehicular technology while increasing adoption. As part of its 2017 EV policy, the government has set a target of one charging station within a 3 Km radius grid in the city.

Sun Mobility has partnered with a sustainable transport provider to be able to solve the first and last mile connectivity for Metro rails.

Sun Mobility’s swap points will be available at all prime Indian Oil petrol bunks across various parts of the city. It will be used by Metroride’s fleet of Piaggio Ape E-city electric three-wheelers.

Such shared mobility facilities like bike rentals are largely popular in the urban commute landscape to complement the inadequate mass transit infrastructure.

Several companies are looking to increase EVs in their fleets to reduce capital and operational expenditure for service providers. Companies like Ola, Uber, Vogo are looking to reduce cost per km for users, thus bringing down pollution by keeping vehicles that emit smoke gasoline.

Good infrastructure is necessary to create a vibrant, clean and shared mobility ecosystem, especially in a city like Bengaluru. For instance, the three-wheeler market consists of 180,000 three-wheelers that have supported 85 LPG stations. The company intends to create a supporting ecosystem by deploying 100 Swap points which can power all forms of shared mobility on the city. It includes 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers as well as last-mile delivery trucks.

In India’s automobile market, EVs account for less than 1% leaving it untapped for most makers to explore.
