Transmission system project- Mumbai Urja Marg set for inauguration

The Mumbai Urja Marg, a significant inter-state transmission system project designed by the Ministry of Power to provide an additional 2,000 MW of electricity to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, is ready for its formal inauguration. The 90-kilometer Padgha-Kharghar transmission line, developed by Sterlite Power, is expected to be a transformative project for the entire region, according to official sources.
The project aims to ensure an uninterrupted power supply to Mumbai, supporting the city's infrastructure-driven economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
The Mumbai Urja Marg project was first discussed in the 41st Standing Committee Meeting of the Power Ministry on December 21, 2016, and was ratified in the 42nd meeting on November 17, 2017. Further discussions took place during the 2nd Meeting of the Empowered Committee on Transmission Lines on August 6, 2018. The project was eventually awarded through a tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) process, with the Letter of Intent (LoI) issued on March 2, 2020.
The Maharashtra cabinet approved a revised policy on October 12, 2022, streamlining land use for ultra-high voltage transmission lines and pylons. This policy change significantly expedited the construction of the Mumbai Urja Marg, allowing its completion in just 20 months. Maharashtra became the first state to implement a specific land-use policy for power transmission projects.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is also the state's energy minister, played key roles in overcoming technical challenges and ensuring the project's timely progress. Fadnavis, in particular, took a special interest in the project, which had faced delays of over 12 years.
A dedicated war room was established to monitor the progress of high-value infrastructure projects, reflecting the government's commitment to driving economic growth and improving the quality of life.
The successful completion of the Mumbai Urja Marg project is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the increasing energy demands of Greater Mumbai and ensuring a sustainable power supply for the region.
