I want to focus on innovation and brand-building and deliver the best people-flow solutions

Amit Gossain, Managing Director, KONE India
From engineering, construction and agriculture equipment to elevator and escalators, Gossain has traced a remarkable journey for himself. In September 2015, he joined as the new Managing Director of KONE India. CW delves into his plans as he spearheads this new assignment.

Vision: KONE is most certainly one of the strong global brands, which is very innovative. I have a passion for building brands and want to continue to focus on this process of innovation, brand-building and delivering the best people-flow solutions. KONE´s emphasis on providing safe solutions, which offer the best ride comfort, has helped delight and retain customers.

Focus areas: KONE is known as an innovation leader in the industry. Reducing the carbon footprint with better eco-efficient solutions is becoming important. Existing buildings need to be modernised to make them more efficient. With this, there is a requirement for elevator modernisation too, and focusing on this part of the business is important.

Current share in the residential market: In India, the residential sector contributes to almost 60 per cent of the business. With more emphasis on energy-efficient products, gearless elevators are gaining advantage and our customers want the best.

KONE I MonoSpace and MiniSpace: KONE I MonoSpace, a machine room-less, gearless solution, was launched in early 2015 and KONE I MiniSpace, a machine room, gearless solution, was launched in October 2015.Both products cater to low and mid-rise modern residential buildings. Our Indian Technology and Engineering Centre (ITEC) played a major role in their development. Customers have been appreciative of the new products.

Plans to stay ahead of competition: Cost-effective products, faster delivery, meeting changing customer requirements and strong R&D are needs of the hour. The major share still comes from the residential segment, although the demand for infrastructure is heavy with airports and metros growing. With tall buildings being the trend, elevators with faster speed are essential. The need for innovative and eco-efficient products is increasing with the green building concept. Educating customers and end-users on the importance of safety is important and our safety initiatives using our mascot ´Liftman´, have been well appreciated by customers and end-users alike.

Special plans for 2016: We have been featured by Forbes among the World´s Most Innovative Companies for the fifth consecutive year. We have a best-in-class production unit and will continue to innovate and provide value to our customers in line with market trends. We will look at expansion as and when market demands increase beyond our existing capacity. Our ITEC will continue to play a key role in supporting KONE India´s market development. We will gear up both on the product and technology platform to meet the needs of the urbanising markets.
