Covid-19 delays construction of rural homes under PMAY-G

Covid-19 pandemic has significantly derailed the building of rural houses under the government鈥檚 flagship Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Gramin in 2020-21, bringing down the total accomplishment so far.
Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Minister of State for Rural Development, said in the Lok Sabha, that against the aim of 2.02 crore houses allotted under the scheme till the financial year 2020-21, 1.50 crore homes or 75% have been achieved.
Additionally, a total of over 12.20 lakh homes have been made during the year 2021-22 against an approximated aim of construction of 44.09 lakh homes under the scheme, the minister for state added.
The ministry of rural development is executing Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Gramin (PMAY-G) to help eligible rural households to construct 2.95 crore pucca homes with basic facilities to accomplish the aim of 鈥淗ousing for All鈥�.
According to the statement, the rural development ministry is conducting regular virtual meetings with the states and UTs to evaluate the growth of the scheme. In addition, daily monitoring of the progress is done on several parameters like gaps in the permission of houses, provision of land to landless beneficiaries, cleaning of the permanent waitlist (PWL) of PMAY-G, gaps in the release of central share or state matching share from the treasury.
Further, the review meetings are being conducted with states also for better knowledge of the restrictions being met and rectifying the same for developing progress of PMAY-G.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) is a centrally sponsored scheme, and the funds are shared by the central and state government in a 60:40 ratio (90:10 in North-Eastern State and hill states comprising Jammu & Kashmir & 100% central share in UTs comprising Ladakh).
