Coimbatore Launches Infrastructure Projects for Urban Makeover

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a series of major infrastructure projects in Coimbatore, aimed at revitalising the city鈥檚 urban and cultural fabric. These include large-scale green spaces, knowledge hubs, and sports facilities. The Rs 1.61 billion Semmozhi Poonga eco-park, being built over 45 acres of the former central prison site in Gandhipuram, is 75 per cent complete. Designed with 22 themed gardens and an open-air stadium, it is set to become a key urban lung.

In Anupparpalayam, construction is ongoing for the Rs three billion Thanthai Periyar Library and Science Centre. The eight-storey library, on a 10-acre site, will host over 100,000 books and science exhibits, with completion targeted for January 2026. Plans also include a new cricket stadium at Ondipudur for 30,000 spectators and a modern hockey stadium at RS Puram, expected by April 2026.

The Coimbatore Municipal Corporation has coordinated with the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Associations of India (CREDAI) Coimbatore to advocate airport expansion, featuring new terminals and runway upgrades. These developments aim to enhance quality of life, boost tourism, and position Coimbatore as a future-ready city.
