Pratibha to be rebuilt, original tenants offered space

Pratibha, a skyscraper off Breach Candy in south Mumbai, will be rebuilt nearly 40 years after one of the largest building violation scams rocked Mumbai and three years after the skeleton of the illegal skyscraper was destroyed. A typical apartment in the area costs around Rs 10,000 per sq ft.

The 36-floor building, which rose to fame in the 1980s, was mockingly referred to as Mumbai's first "tower of corruption." 35 members of the society who had reserved apartments in the building forty years ago are currently in negotiations with the developer.

On the nearly two-acre site, which is located in Sophia College lane, it is intended to construct a new tower. Although they are negotiating for a larger space, the original flat buyers, who never got to stay in the building, have each been offered 3,300 sq ft of space.
