BMC delays signing of pact for Rs 70-cr project

Berhampur Muncipal Corporation (BMC) could not sign an agreement with United Phosphorous Engineering and Environment for the Rs 70-crore solid waste management project because of as the model code of conduct is in force for the forthcoming urban bodies polls.

The Baroda-based firm was selected by the civic body for the project through competitive bidding. The integrated solid waste system involves collection, transportation, treatment and disposal with composting technology.

The civic body acquired over 31.62 acre land at Mohada for the project. The corporation scheduled to sign an agreement with the firm on August 30, reports indicate.

But the State Election Commission said signing of the agreement now will violate the model code of conduct.

International Finance Corporation (IFC), a World Bank group, was appointed as transaction advisor to develop the scientific, waste management project.

The city, comes under Ganjam district, generates about 138 tonne of waste daily and it is likely to reach 250 tonne in the next 30 years.

In 18 out of 37 wards, the civic body outsourced door-to-door collection of waste at present. In the remaining 19 wards, the corporation staff sweep the streets and collect garbage from community bins.
