LONGi & IUCN Champion Climate Action at COP29

The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, held in Baku from November 11-22, 2023, witnessed a significant milestone in the intersection of climate action and biodiversity conservation. LONGi, a global leader in solar energy, unveiled the "Initiative of Advancing Climate Action and Biodiversity Conservation with Photovoltaic," developed in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The initiative was introduced by LONGi’s Vice President Zhang Haimeng, IUCN Deputy Director General Stewart Maginnis, and Ant Group’s Wang Xiaoying, who all attended the event. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released a report at COP29 highlighting climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution as the top three global challenges. LONGi, emphasizing the dual importance of renewable energy and ecosystem protection, advanced its corporate sustainability efforts by launching the initiative alongside IUCN.

The new initiative calls for companies to adopt best practices in aligning their operations with international environmental agreements, including the Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It encourages adopting eco-friendly designs for renewable energy projects, increasing clean energy use, and developing corporate cultures that prioritize biodiversity conservation.

LONGi’s commitment to biodiversity isn’t new. Since COP15 in 2021, the company has worked actively to integrate photovoltaic technology into conservation efforts. From providing clean energy solutions to wildlife reserves in South Africa to supporting the Qinling Giant Panda Conservation in China, LONGi’s efforts aim to reduce environmental impacts while contributing to wildlife protection.

At the heart of LONGi's philosophy is a call for collaboration. Zhang Haimeng urged global cooperation to protect biodiversity and achieve a sustainable future for all. The company's initiatives, such as the "Solar + Tea Complementary Project" in China’s Guizhou Province and green ecological developments in the Kubuqi Desert, are part of their broader mission to use solar power for environmental betterment.

This joint action between LONGi and IUCN underscores a transformative approach to addressing global ecological challenges. Through this partnership, LONGi hopes to inspire a larger industry movement towards the sustainable integration of clean energy and biodiversity preservation.

As we move forward, this initiative is not just a corporate responsibility; it's a global call to action to safeguard our planet's biodiversity and ensure the harmonious coexistence of nature and technology.
