Telangana Secures 2,000 E-Buses

Telangana is set to significantly boost its electric bus fleet, with the Union government sanctioning 2,000 e-buses for the state. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy conveyed his gratitude to the Centre for this allocation, valued at approximately Rs 1.2 billion, under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme.

In a letter addressed to the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Reddy expressed his appreciation for the initiative, which aims to enhance public transport and reduce pollution. He highlighted Telangana's proactive approach to adopting electric vehicles, referencing the state's Electric Vehicle Policy of 2020. This policy has already supported various electric mobility initiatives, including trials of 300 electric buses by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC).

The Chief Minister further requested an additional 800 e-buses for Telangana, bringing the total sought to 2,800. He emphasised the critical need for these buses to improve connectivity and public transportation accessibility across the state. Reddy cited the high daily ridership of TSRTC, serving around 4.5 million passengers, and noted that 96 per cent of its fleet operates on diesel, contributing to significant emissions. He stressed that transitioning to electric buses would not only reduce operational costs but also align with the state's environmental objectives.

Telangana's existing public transport network comprises 9,068 buses and serves over 3,600 routes. The new e-buses are expected to be deployed in Hyderabad and other major urban centres, improving both intra-city and inter-city connectivity.
