Flight operations at Pune airport begins

Airport Director of Pune Santosh Dhoke told the media that the flight operations would continue from 30 October, Saturday as the Indian Air Force (IAF) has conveyed that the runway will be made available for civil work.

The Pune airport was closed for 14 days from 16 October because the Air Force decided to undertake runway resurfacing work. Many airlines had to cancel passenger bookings and reschedule or reimburse the flyers after the announcement from the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Overall, 108 flight movements had been rescheduled, out of which 56 were arrivals and 52 scheduled departures, as per AAI officials.

Officials suggested the passengers reach the terminal two to three hours before the scheduled departure. Dhoke said that the airport is opening during the festive season after 14 days of closure. The department is expecting a rush for a few days, so the passengers are advised to reach the airport two to three hours earlier than the scheduled time.

He added that the embargo on night flights will continue for a while as the work by the Air Force is not yet completed. When the airport was closed for 14 days, the flight movement was 100, with about 16,000 passengers. The resurfacing work was scheduled between April-May, but it was postponed.

The IAF said that the work of the runway was inescapable and important to address the deteriorating condition of the runway.
